Generally speaking, when I go on overwatch I do it for the sole purpose of locking an enemy into position- enemies usually respond to overwatch by firing, going into overwatch themselves, or hunkering down. Originally posted by Twitchblade:I look it at as conserving actions, which is a key part of how I play the tactical portion. I would never take it without Opportunist later on, however. It's also useful to look at what other skills it competes with in the class trees to assess it's value. Even if it misses, you still have the benefit of keeping the alien in place due to going on overwatch.
#LONG WAR COVERING FIRE FREE#
It increases the chances that you get a free action during the enemy turn, as well as robbing the aliens of one of their actions. By going on overwatch, you can shoot at them if they move, but now you get to fire at them if they do literally anything but hunker down or go on overwatch themselves (I'm reasonably positive about this, though I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm that). However, with Covering Fire, you get a bit of a bonus. So you have the overwatch benefit of keeping an enemy in place. I look it at as conserving actions, which is a key part of how I play the tactical portion. I'm sure there's something wrong in my logic, I just can't see it. I really want to see the points from people that like this skill. So now, because of " covering fire ", your soldier wastes his overwatch shoting the guy in cover, leaving all other enemy units free to roam around as they wish.Ĭonclusion: Covering Fire seems like a bad decision overall. But then, some random alien in cover shoots someone. So you put another soldier on overwatch to try pin down the possible-flanker. Lets say a squaddie made a bad move and somehow his flank is now under threat. To me it's much easier for this skill to work AGAINST me. (Condition 3 pretty much means: "The alien is inside a closed building of some sorts, and your squad doesn't have window-sight") Which require the following conditions to be met:ġ) The alien has been activated and moved out of sight.Ģ) Your soldier is pinned down on his spot for some reason.ģ) The alien decide to reposition himself to be able to shoot your squad, but the alien moved in a way that he wouldn't cross your line of sight at any point (Hence, normal overwatch wouldn't work). I can only see 1 very specific situation in which this could be useful. I know it is a pretty popular skill among players, that's why I'm making this thread. instead of attacking the alien with (Aim - cover defense) chance on a regular attack, you can decide to overwatch and attack with (Aim - Coverdefense)*0.7 chance. Covering Fire: "Overwatch reaction can trigger on enemy attack does not work with suppression."
